The “ASSOCIAZIONE BIANCA GARAVAGLIA” (ABG) was established on April 28, 1987, and was named after Bianca, an ever so sweet girl who at the age 5 contracted a rare form of neoplasia. It was Bianca who, during the months spent at the Istituto Tumori di Milano, drew the green and fuchsia flower that immediately became the symbol of the Association and synonymous with hope.

The Association was established by Bianca’s parents who, aware of the many difficulties faced when having to deal with infantile tumors, firmly believed that immediate and direct support to existing facilities was necessary.

The goal of the “Associazione Bianca Garavaglia” is to collect funds to promote scientific studies and medical treatment in the field of infantile tumors, as well as to provide first-hand operational support to all related initiatives.

Collaboration with National Institute of Tumors in Milano

The Association has been operating for over 25 years now, supporting the so called “Struttura Complessa di Pediatria” (Pediatric Complex Unit) of the “IRCCS Istituto Nazionale Tumori di Milano” (National Institute for Tumors of Milan) Foundation, one of the major research and treatment centers in the field of infantile tumors, where small patients from all over Italy converge.

In the last years, in particular with reference to some specific infantile tumor categories, scientific research has made achievements that were once unthinkable. The survival percentage of children affected by a tumor has grown from 50 to 70% in the past 20 years: quite a remarkable outcome. ABG has taken a significant part in fostering this advancement, promoting research, helping to fund various research projects, and offering psychological support to the young patients and their families.

Volounteers, Mission and Dream

The Association relies mainly on volunteers, and is therefore able to keep costs low. The majority of ABG volunteers are parents, brothers and sisters, or relatives of children who have been (or still are) under treatment at the Milan INT Pediatrics Dept.

Our MISSION is to promote scientific studies and medical treatment in the field of infantile tumors.

Our DREAM is to retire, after years of honorable service, happy not to be useful any longer, due to the final defeat of infantile neoplasias.
